Strategies A multi-pronged strategy is envisaged, including both short term and longer term programmes.
These will be to:
i) Develop data banks in collaboration with other research organizations on women academics and women's programmes.
ii) Establish a fund for research into areas related to gender and women.
iii) Establish a scholarship fund for women at post-graduate level as this is an area where women are poorly represented.
iv) Develop a strong web presence, including offering on-line distance education courses.
v) Identify focal points in African countries either through FAWE National Chapters or through university and other higher education departments that are suitable. These focal points will be responsible for working out detailed strategies and work plans for their respective countires.
vi) Identify champions in higher education institutions to help promote and establish gender mainstreaming. Gender mainstreaming entails:
" Ensuring that the policies within higher education institutions take into account gender equity and gender equality in terms of staffing, promotions and enrolments. " Ensuring that the curriculum incorporates issues related to gender equity and gender equality. " Establishing norms regarding the definition of sexual harassment. " Establishing regulations regarding sexual harassment.
vii) Establish close partnerships in order to promote its aims and objectives with sister organizations including:
" The Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE); " The Association of African Universities (AAU); " The African Union's Gender Directorate; " The African Centre on Gender and Development (ACGD) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA); " The African Virtual University; " The New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD); " UNESCO, in particular the UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (IICBA); " UNICEF, in particular on the U. N. Girls' Education programme; " The World Bank Institute and other World Bank institutions; " The Commonwealth of Learning (COL); and " Other women's organizations such as women's banks, women's NGOs, etc.
